History
“Serving travelers since 1852.....”
The first settlers arrived by wagon train in 1852 to Genesee Valley during the westward movement to mine or farm the land. One such settler, Edwin Hosselkus the original owner and builder of many of the buildings still found on the ranch today. Driving an ox train from Oswego County, New York, Edwin chose Genesee.. “On all side the mountains, rising to a great height, are covered with fine growth of timber. From the main valley numerous spars of small valleys make out from the main meadows, upon which cattle are browsing, their sleek coats and rounded sides testifying to the luxuriant growth which here abounds” Unchanged by the time since past, Edwin Hosselkus would be surprised to see the same ole Genesee Valley that was so vividly described in the 1890 volume of the “State Resource”.
Located on the main stage coach route and a pony express stop Edwin Hosselkus found it fitting to open the Genesee Store in the late 1800’s. This store served the local residents and travelers passing through. Passengers on the stage coaches would stop and take their lunch breaks here; sitting on the front porch that still serves patrons today. He later built the first brick house in the valley in 1881 which still stands and serves as a place for pastoral retreats. Appreciating the rich history of the area and its buildings the owners have made every effort to preserve or incorporate these historic barns and buildings into what is now the Sierra Ranch Retreat.
